GIMP is and always has been unusable due to its terrible tool layout. I will not use any program with a setup more complicated than "download this and run the installer" so I don't care if there's some way of fiddling with my new software to make it somehow magically backwards-compatible with old stuff. Older versions were adequate, aside from not allowing me to change the palettes of GIF or 256-color BMP images. I don't know what version number I used to use which worked fine-ish (it's always had issues that prevented it from completely replacing MSPaint for me, even on Vista), I just know the version I tried a couple months ago was garbage. is no longer a good option because the new releases janked up the anti-aliasing disabling and the fill bucket (which is a MUST-HAVE for digital art). It's been giving me lots of trouble in other areas as well so I think I'm going to be getting rid of it soon. i can't say if that's gonna implemented in the new version of FireAlpaca but will have to wait and see.I can't make custom graphics in SMBX because FireAlpaca is just fine with opening and editing GIF images, but refuses to save in that format.

but, yeah i still had to work with two programs again except i had to animate and recently color it in FireAlpaca, save it as a PSD file than add the finishing touches in GIMP and save it as a GIF, because you can not save your animation as a Gif within FireAlpaca.

when you start a new layer it temporary turns your previous layer into a red or green color when your not working with that said previous layer. but, the onion skinning of the feature works very well. the Onion Skin Mode of FireAlpaca seems to work way better than the GIMP lightbox plugin i been using, yes, it still uses the layers as a timeline like the other plugin rather than having a separate animation timeline which is somewhat a downer. Recently, FireAlpaca has updated with a new feature called "Onion Skin Mode" which is for creating traditional frame by frame animation.
